Jacob "dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it." (Genesis 28:12)
During periods of agony a believer will say and do some decent things they otherwise would never have dreamed they would be able to say and do under the circumstances. While their hearts and minds contain the blackest of thoughts, they speak gracious words, make kind gestures, engage in selfless acts, and feel a surrendered spirit arise in their darkness.
The rising spirit, and the 'decent things', are the direct result of God's covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and you, in Christ. It is the Spirit's work, along with the angels, by God's command, at work on the ladder between earth and Heaven toward the ultimate fulfillment of Emmanuel in you, and of your 'self' being progressively swallowed up in His resurrection life (1 Corinthians 15:54, Isaiah 25:8).
“I am the Lord God of your fathers Abraham and Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. Also your descendants will be as the dust of the earth; you will spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed (Christ) all the families of the earth will be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.” (Genesis 28:13-15)
