Colossians 3:1-2 "If you have been risen with Christ, seek those things that are above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth."
Galatians 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."
A life with Christ as Lord cannot be defined by what it collects and carries with it, but by what it lets go of. This is true because human nature is fully and completely corrupt, and without Christ it cannot acquire anything fully good or everlasting.
However, when the old self is crucified with Christ, it is also risen with Christ in newness of life, and the old self begins to see the relative worth of things above and below. The old self progressively lets go: of things, of expectations, of fear, of idols, of practices, of pet sins. At the same time, by the work of the Spirit, affections are progressively set on the things above.
The concept of 'letting go' warrants considerable meditation because wildly popular creature-motivated theology has this concept backwards. It's all about what YOU get, a value proposition. The value of things below esteemed very high and the things above hardly or never mentioned.
The Bible is clear that to follow Christ, YOU must die to yourself, and among other things that means you must die to your natural affection of things below.
