Providence Letter

derb4262

"I have set the Lord before me, He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved, I shall stand firm." (Psalm 16:8)

My Dear Ones,

I love this definition of providence from the Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 5.1. It says, "God the great Creator of all things doth uphold, direct, dispose, and govern all creatures, actions, and things, from the greatest even to the least, by His most wise and holy providence, according to His infallible foreknowledge, and the free and immutable counsel of His own will, to the praise of the glory of His wisdom, power, justice, goodness, and mercy."

But providence isn't only a definition. It's something God's people experience with greater and greater clarity as they grow closer and closer to the Lord. God is aware of everything in and throughout my life and in all of it He is working out the transformation He has planned for me, in order that I will be able to take my place in His family, for eternity. As my Father He presides over every detail of my life, including and especially all the elements of salvation in Jesus Christ alone. As Savior, the Son has made payment for all the law of love toward God and neighbor I've broken, and imputed His righteousness as mine, for all the law of love I've left undone. The Spirit guides, moves, clarifies, and motivates me in all the details of my life. God does this within His full Story, for His Glory. The result for me? Everlasting good.

Nothing so high, as above it.

Nothing so low, as below it.

Nothing so large, that it cannot be reduced by it;

Nothing so small, that it cannot be augmented by it;

Nothing so confused, that it cannot be ordered by it;

Nothing so bad or sad, that good cannot be drawn out by it;

Nothing so certainly wicked, that the evil cannot be thwarted by it;

Nothing so deviously designed, that the plot cannot be disappointed by it;

Nothing so natural, that its nature cannot be miraculously suspended by it.

My God for Christ's sake is at my right Hand, with providential care. The lines, as noted by an old versification of Psalm 16, the "lines are fallen unto me in places large and fair. A goodly heritage is mine marked out with Gracious care".
