What's in a Name?

derb4262

"Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:20)

The names of God personify His character. He is His names. One way to learn more about God and draw closer to Him is through His names. Compare His perfect consistency with our own human inconsistency in the Jehovah names by which God identifies Himself. We attempt the ideals to be sure, but we cannot ever fully deliver.

Jehovah is I am that I am. (Am I unmoved by anything outside myself?)

Jehovah-jireh is I am that I am Provides. (What can I provide that I have not first received?)

Jehovah-rapha is I am that I am Heals. (What can I heal that won't decay and die?)

Jehovah-nissi is I am that I am a Banner. (How long will my name protect my child?)

Jehovah-shalom is I am that I am Peace. (Can I calm a troubled mind or conscience?)

Jehovah-va-ah is I am that I am a Shepherd. (Where do I lead that doesn't contain my sin?)

Jehovah-tsidenu is I am that I am Righteousness. (I am the least of all saints)

Jehovah-shammah is I am that I am Present. (I am limited to a tiny, tiny locale)

Your name has a meaning, just as Deborah means 'bee'. It just doesn't mean much beyond distinguishing you from others who are as finite and ephemeral as you are, and nothing at all to most of the population. Unless of course, you are a child of God. In that case, your name was written in the "Lamb's book of life" (Revelation 21:27) and it means that Christ's personification as God in flesh is seen by the Father as yours.

Divine assistance enables a man, as is appropriate and necessary, to lay his own name in the dust for the sake of exalting God's name(s). Because He is.
